Typically light duty trail maintenance is done in spring, such as clearing deadfall and repairing wet sections left by winter, not just to reopen routes but to address the root causes of erosion and longstanding drainage failures. Key activities include removing fallen trees and branches, raking loose rocks from frost and installing or repairing water diversion features like grade reversals, rolling dips, and properly pitching drainage dips so water sheds off the trail rather than running down it. If problems areas persist mitigating long lasting areas with rock armors or in some cases drainage pipe might be the solution. In some cases rerouteing trail alignments to maintain sustainable grades that reduce future maintenance and protect surrounding soils and waterways may be needed.
Examples of project package scopes are below.
$ Basic — Spring maintenance package. Remove regular winter blowdown, fix small puddles, remove loose rocks and fix erosion areas. No machines
$$ Mid — Basic + medium persistent problem area fixes. Excavator + plate compactor.
$$$ Full — Full machine rework & rerouting as needed. All necessary equipment required.
